'fiya' divides the word up into two syllables, when the american word is cut down to one. only in british english is it still two (many people still divide it up, american or not, but usually this is dependent on context - ie. 'fire my gun' instead of 'set it on fire' - of course these both could go either way, but there are trends formed in everyday speech that say that the two examples i just gave are often pronounced differently). this makes sense in the context of the song, as he's rhyming it with 'higher,' 'pyre,' etc. however, drawing the word out to get both syllables out of it does not mean it's pronounced any differently (ie. british instead of american), especially because the words it's being forced to match do not rhyme with its british counterpart.
there is a clear 'r' sound in the american pronunciation of the word 'fire.' of course as anyone badly faking a british accent will tell you (meaning "in british english..."), the 'r' in fire is optional, usually only used today to clear the word up if the schwa (/ə/ - it means 'uh') runs too close to another sonorant (most vowel sounds). and as far as 'fiya' goes, the /ə/ is only in british english, dropped in the american pronunciation. so no, 'fiya' is not how morrison would or did pronounce fire, even drawing it out for the purpose of a song. dude was from florida. |

If we're going to get technical about it all, I'm not implying that's how it's pronounced in the song. I wrote it out as 'fiya' because I was having fun with it and that's how I sing 'fire.' "RYAN STARTED THE FIYAAAAAAAAAA." And also, in the actual song, he pronounces it differently a few times. Near the end you can easily hear him not fully pronouncing it and sometimes it even sounds like he's saying 'fi-yer.' I mean, it's a song, not someone orally delivering their Master's thesis. |

Pretty sure anyone who sees "Fiya" is gonna say it as "Fi-ya" not "Fi-yer" like the Americanized version so therefore people are gonna look at it and go "Oh the Doors?...No, thats a bastardized version"
